Indian cinema's most recognizable genre doesn't have an equivalent anywhere else. Crystallized in the 1970s by screenwriting duo Salim–Javed, the masala film fuses action, romance, melodrama, comedy, mystery, and musical spectacle into a single narrative — a run of blockbusters that includes Zanjeer, Deewaar, Don, Trishul, and Mr. India.
In Part Two of our Ultimate Guide to Indian Cinema, we trace that form from its anti-establishment roots — Amitabh Bachchan's "angry young man," the dockworkers and orphans of a system that failed them — through Ramesh Sippy's Sholay, the watershed film that combined the Western, the epic, and the melodrama into a box-office record that stood for decades.
