First, it was Bamako. Now it is Niamey. Another Sahel capital has come under attack. Gunmen targeted Niger's main international airport and a neighbouring military base in an assault claimed by JNIM, al Qaeda's affiliate in the Sahel. The attack comes less than five months after the same airport was hit and raises fresh questions over General Abdourahamane Tiani's security strategy. Since seizing power, Niger's military rulers have expelled French and American forces and strengthened ties with Russia.
