This video is about:
The Seawise Giant was not just the largest ship ever built—it was a floating giant that pushed the limits of engineering. Originally launched in 1979 as a supertanker, the vessel underwent a massive expansion project that increased its length by an astonishing 267 feet (81 meters). Engineers literally cut the ship into sections and inserted new structural blocks into its hull, transforming it into a vessel over 458 meters (1,504 feet) long. The result was the biggest ship humanity has ever constructed, capable of carrying more oil than any tanker before or since.

But how did a ship of this unbelievable size actually work? From its enormous cargo tanks and powerful pumping systems to its ballast tanks that kept the vessel stable at sea, the Seawise Giant was a masterpiece of marine engineering. Despite its massive capacity, the ship was so large that it could not pass through the Suez Canal, Panama Canal, or even many ports around the world. In this video, we explore how the world's largest ship operated, how it transported millions of barrels of crude oil, and the unique challenges faced by its crew.

The story of the Seawise Giant took a dramatic turn during the Iran-Iraq War in 1988. While anchored in the Persian Gulf, the vessel was attacked by Iraqi aircraft and heavily damaged. The giant tanker was left burning and eventually sank in shallow waters. Many believed its story had ended there. However, in one of the greatest salvage operations in maritime history, the ship was raised from the seabed, repaired, and brought back into service under a new name, proving that even the largest machine ever built could survive war and destruction.

In its final years, the aging giant was converted into a floating storage and offloading unit, continuing to serve the oil industry long after its days as a tanker had ended. Eventually, economic realities and maintenance costs caught up with the legendary vessel. In 2009, the Seawise Giant made its final voyage to the ship-breaking yards of Alang, India, where the world's largest ship was dismantled piece by piece. This is the incredible life story of the Seawise Giant—from record-breaking engineering achievement to wartime survivor and finally its journey to the scrapyard.
