Mrs. Audrey Williams Dorsey is an education trailblazer, breaking the teacher segregation barrier in the Houston Independent School District. Audrey is a rare native Houstonian whose life and career reflect grace, resilience, and unwavering dedication to education. She applied her Texas Southern University Bachelor's and Master's degrees to strengthen her commitment to academic excellence in a segregated education environment. She honored her values of scholarship and service by becoming a champion for diversity and equity in education. Audrey Dorsey is a rare native Houstonian whose life and career reflect grace, resilience, and unwavering dedication to education.She is a graduate of Phillis Wheatley High School in Houston TX. Audrey continued her academic journey at Texas Southern University and earned her Bachelor and Master’s degree. She is also a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated. Audrey’s education legacy includes being one of the first Elementary “Crossover Teachers” in the Houston Independent School District—a title given to Black teachers assigned to segregated all-white schools during early integration. Audrey met the challenge with quiet strength, courage, and professionalism. Audrey and husband Wilbert called Houston’s Sunnyside community home where they co-owned a successful commercial painting business. They owned 200 acres of land in Tyler, Texas, balancing business and ranch management. They raised two successful children, instilling the values of resilience, integrity, and hard work.
