La reanimación cardiopulmonar permite sustituir la función del corazón mediante compresiones torácicas que mantienen la circulación. Antes de actuar, es fundamental asegurarse de que el entorno es seguro, pedir ayuda y contactar con emergencias o solicitar un desfibrilador. Después, se debe comprobar si la persona responde y si respira, abriendo la vía aérea con la maniobra frente-mentón.
Si no hay respiración, hay que iniciar compresiones en el centro del pecho, con fuerza y a un ritmo constante de unas 100 por minuto. Abellán insiste en que esta parte es la más importante hasta que llegue ayuda profesional. Actuar puede marcar la diferencia entre la vida y la muerte.
