Kings and Generals animated historical series on the history of Japan continues with a full length documentary video on the Sengoku Jidai, as we explain all battles and campaigns of the Japan's warring states period from the Onin War to the Tokugawa Shogunate's formation. Japan’s Sengoku Jidai, the “Age of Warring States,” was more than a century of near-constant conflict, political betrayal, and military innovation that reshaped the country forever. This documentary traces that long descent into chaos from the Ōnin War, when the authority of the Ashikaga shogunate collapsed, to the final destruction of the Toyotomi clan and the rise of Tokugawa rule.
The story follows the rise of powerful daimyo and the men who defined the era: Oda Nobunaga, the ruthless innovator who shattered old conventions; Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin, locked in legendary rivalry at the Battles of Kawanakajima; Tokugawa Ieyasu, patient and calculating, surviving defeat at Mikatagahara to shape Japan’s future; and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who rose from humble origins to complete Japan’s unification.
Major turning, including Okehazama, where Nobunaga stunned Japan with a daring upset; Anegawa and Nagashino, where firearms changed warfare forever; the long struggle against the Ikkō-ikki at Ishiyama Hongan-ji; and the betrayal at Honnō-ji that ended Nobunaga’s life. Hideyoshi’s consolidation of power through Yamazaki, Shizugatake, and Komaki and Nagakute leads into the great campaigns against the Shimazu, the fall of the Hōjō at Odawara, and the disastrous Imjin War in Korea.
The conflict reaches its decisive climax with the Sekigahara Campaign, culminating in the Battle of Sekigahara, before concluding with the brutal Sieges of Osaka, the death of Sanada Yukimura, and the final end of the Sengoku age. This is the full, unbroken story of how war forged early modern Japan.
