Gail Goodrich Highlights with the Jazz (32 Points)
February 19, 1978 - The Gail Goodrich Utah Jazz era is directly responsible for Magic Johnson landing in Los Angeles. Consider the following:1. Goodrich, a five-time all-star and future Hall of Famer, signed a free agent deal with the Utah Jazz in 1976.
2. As per rules at the time, teams who lost players to free agency were due some form of compensation. With Goodrich's championship pedigree and all-star history, the Jazz were gracious in their return gift to L.A.: three future first round picks (1977, 1978, and 1979) and one second round pick (1980).
3. The 1978-79 Jazz finished with the worst record in the NBA (26-56). As Utah had gifted their 1979 first rounder to L.A. in the Goodrich signing three years prior, this ensured that the Lakers would have a spot alongside the Chicago Bulls in a coin-flip battle for the No. 1 overall pick.
4. The Lakers won the aforementioned coin flip, going on to select Magic Johnson No. 1 overall. The Bulls settled for David Greenwood.
As for the game above, Gail Goodrich finished with 32 points (13-of-19 shooting) but you're only catching around 23 or so since the broadcast continually cut to the Boston-Denver feed. The Pete Maravich-less Jazz lost 130-111.
