Matt Steigenga Wins the 1988 McDonalds All-American Dunk Contest
The pride of Grand Rapids South Christian (MI), Matt Steigenga emulated Michael Jordan himself in defeating Chris Mills and taking home the 1988 McDonald's All-American Dunk Contest trophy.After winning the dunk contest, Steigenga embarked on a four-year career at Michigan State, where he averaged 10.2 points and 4.5 rebounds as a senior. Drafted 52nd overall by the Chicago Bulls in the 1992 NBA Draft, Steigenga wouldn't actually make his NBA debut until five years later, when he signed a 10-day contract in mid-April during Michael Jordan's quest for a fifth championship. Steigenga made two appearances for the Bulls and made one field goal - an alley-oop dunk from Steve Kerr. Despite not appearing in any playoff games, Steigenga received a championship ring for his services.
