A placa Mercosul trocou um dígito por uma letra e, como são apenas dez dígitos e vinte e três letras, o número de combinações foi ampliado de 175 para 456 milhões de combinações. Mas o argumento para esta nova alteração é ridículo, pois a fiscalização é toda eletrônica e, portanto, desnecessário constar o local do registro do carro.
