Al-Attar tewas terkena rudal tentara Israel (IDF) di dekat pintu masuk kota Shaat, atau sekitar 100 kilometer dari perbatasan Israel.
Menurut IDF, Al-Attar terlibat dalam perencanaan dan pelaksanaan terhadap serangan ke Israel.
Ia bergabung dengan kelompok pembela Palestina di Lebanon yang mendapatkan dukungan senjata dari Iran.
