Kinder und Jugendliche sollen im Internet besser geschützt werden – allerdings nicht, indem sie einfach weniger online sind. Stattdessen sollen Plattformen, Schulen, Eltern und auch der Staat mehr Verantwortung übernehmen. Zu diesem Ergebnis kommt die unabhängige Expertenkommission der Bundesregierung.Die Ausgangslage für die Expertenkommission „Kinder- und Jugendschutz in der digitalen Welt“ war deutlich: Eine Million Kinder und Jugendliche nutzen ihr zufolge Online-Plattformen wie Instagram oder TikTok auf problematische Weise, 300.000 zeigten Suchtverhalten. Der Auftrag war damit ebenfalls klar: Sie soll Vorschläge erarbeiten für besseren Schutz junger Menschen im Netz.
