❓ The Higher Trigonometry question discussed in this video:
"In a mechanical system designed to dampen vibrations, two rotating components operate at angles whose tangent values sum to 3 and multiply to 2. To determine the resulting vibration amplitude during phase overlap, the sine of the sum of these angles is required. If two angles have tangent values such that their sum is 3 and product is 2, find the sine of the sum of the two angles."
✏️ Quick solution:
tan A + tan B = 3, tan A · tan B = 2
tan(A + B) = (tan A + tan B) / (1 − tan A · tan B) = 3 / (1 − 2) = −3
So A + B lies in the 2nd quadrant (for acute A and B: tan A = 1, tan B = 2 → A = 45°, B ≈ 63.4°, A + B ≈ 108.4°)
sin(A + B) = 3/√10 (≈ 0.949)
⚠️ The question never says the angles are acute – without that, sin(A + B) could also be −3/√10. Watch the video for the full discussion and the objection point.
