DR Congo Mulls Legal Action Against Apple For Using "Blood Minerals" | Firstpost AfricaThe Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is considering legal action against Apple in both France and the United States, alleging the company used minerals that were illegally exploited. According to the DRC's Paris-based legal team, Apple allegedly acquired essential minerals that were smuggled out of the DRC and into Rwanda, where they were laundered and incorporated into the global supply chain. One of DR Congo's lawyers noted that Apple responded to the formal notice with a brief reply, which he described as potentially contemptuous, cynical, and arrogant. The DRC’s legal representatives convened in Kinshasa to strategise on the case and consulted with President Felix Tshisekedi. Bourdon indicated that legal actions are being considered for both France and the United States, and other potential challenges could arise in countries across all continents. The DRC possesses significant reserves of tantalum, tin, tungsten, and gold—collectively known as 3T or 3TG—which are crucial for manufacturing smartphones and other electronics. The mineral-rich Great Lakes region has suffered from violence since the regional conflicts of the 1990s. Violence flared up again in late 2021 when the March 23 Movement (M23) rebels started reclaiming large areas. The DRC, alongside the United Nations and Western nations, accuses Rwanda of backing these rebel groups to seize control of the region's extensive mineral resources, an accusation Rwanda denies.
