At #NasscomFutureForge2026, two sessions on #Day1 - took on the same question from opposite ends: what standard should Indian research hold itself to, and what does it actually take to get that research into a paying customer's hands.In "The Standard India's Labs Need to Meet," dr manish gupta, Senior Director, Google DeepMind, made the case for what he calls "root node problems," the hard, multidisciplinary challenges that, once solved, unlock progress across many other problems at once. He argued that Indian labs default to incremental, solvable-in-months research, and that the standard worth meeting is the willingness to aim at problems large enough to fail at.
From Lab to Market: Two Paths, Two Proof Points" featured Prof. SK Sinha, Chairman and Chief Architect, L2M Rail, on the technology licensing path, alongside Dr. Karthik L, Founder & CEO, Arqgene, on the spin-off founder path. The session walked through what it actually took to build a translation company between IISc's research and Indian Railways as a commercial customer.
Both sessions arrived at the same underlying point: ambition and commercialization are not separate problems for India's Deeptech ecosystem to solve in sequence. They have to be solved together, by labs willing to aim at harder problems and by the structures built to carry those problems to market.
