Darko Milicic Low Key Breaks Hand in the Midst of Pistons Celebration

June 15, 2004 - While a spattering of initial news reports at the time reported that Detroit Pistons rookie Darko Milicic broke his right hand on an attempted jump shot, the truth is Darko's bad break actually occurred after absorbing a swipe down foul from Brian Cook on an otherwise routine drive to the rim.

Milicic, supremely reserved on the court as a rookie in Detroit, showed no initial sign of injury, sauntering to the free throw line while the majority of the world focused on his teammates as they celebrated their impending NBA championship. Eventually, Milicic can be seen looking down at his right hand between free throws then holding it gingerly as he jogged up court. Following a Rick Fox layup, Milicic can be seen motioning to a preoccupied Larry Brown, the Pistons' head coach.

"I was trying to show Larry Brown my hand because my hand was like shaking," Milicic said years later. "He just pushed me back in the game."

Milicic stayed engaged enough in the game to snag a one-handed offensive rebound before being stripped by Luke Walton. Seconds later, the celebration officially commenced and any potential injury to Milicic's hand took a back seat as he faded into the background of confetti, fireworks, and photo ops.

Later, x-rays would reveal a break in the right hand that required surgery to repair. Milicic was on the shelf for eight weeks that summer, missing the Athens Olympics and Summer League, prime opportunities to develop his game after an underwhelming rookie campaign.
