This video explains why India is exploring a new air corridor through China’s Xinjiang region near Hotan, how it could reduce the time and cost of westbound flights, and why the proposed route remains strategically and operationally challenging.
India is exploring an alternative air route through China’s Xinjiang region to reduce the impact of Pakistan’s continued airspace restrictions on Indian airlines. The proposed route, known as the Hotan route, could allow flights from Delhi and Mumbai to travel towards Leh, enter Chinese airspace near Hotan, move towards Kyrgyzstan and connect with existing routes to Europe, the UK and North America.

Pakistan’s airspace restrictions have forced Indian carriers to take longer routes over the Arabian Sea and towards Oman, increasing flight time, fuel consumption and operating costs. Reports indicate that some westbound flights have faced 45 minutes to two hours of additional flying time, depending on the sector.

Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu has confirmed that discussions on the Hotan route are taking place between India and China, with the Ministry of External Affairs engaging with Chinese counterparts. However, there is currently no confirmed agreement or announced timeline for opening the route.

The video explains the India-China air route, Xinjiang Hotan corridor, Pakistan airspace ban, impact on Air India and IndiGo, flight-time and fuel-cost implications, and the strategic significance of using Chinese airspace.

The proposed corridor also presents operational challenges because parts of the region involve high mountains and sensitive airspace, making route planning, emergency diversion options and regulatory clearances important considerations.
