DRC Ebola Outbreak Could Be 3 Times Larger | 15,000 Cases Feared As Virus Spreads
The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) could be significantly larger than official figures suggest, with Africa CDC warning that the actual number of infections may be up to three times higher than reported. As of August 18, DRC health authorities had reported 5,208 confirmed Ebola cases and 2,476 deaths across six provinces. However, Africa CDC modeling suggests the real number of infections could potentially be between 10,000 and 15,000 cases. Health authorities have warned that only around 30–40% of infections may currently be detected, raising concerns about continued transmission.The DRC government has also launched the “Congo River Without Ebola” initiative to strengthen surveillance along the Congo River and prevent the virus from reaching major population centres, including Kinshasa.
