Why More Young People Are Getting Cancer
Why are more young people getting cancer?Cancer rates are falling among many older adults, but several cancers are rising in younger generations, especially colorectal cancer.
Among adults ages 20 to 49, colorectal cancer rates have been increasing by roughly 3% per year. Researchers are also seeing higher risks for cancers involving the breast, kidney, pancreas, and other organs. There probably isn’t one single cause.
Obesity, processed diets, sedentary lifestyles, metabolic changes, and faster biological aging may all be contributing. But another problem is making the trend more dangerous. Delayed diagnosis. Young patients are often assumed to be too young for cancer, allowing warning signs to be dismissed until the disease is much harder to treat.
Cancer is changing, and the healthcare system may not be changing fast enough with it.
