Adel is just 13 years old — but her determination is rewriting her future.Growing up in Kasai, one of the most deprived regions in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Adel was forced to drop out of school because her family couldn’t afford the fees. Like many girls in the region — where over 60% of people are illiterate and nearly one in three women have never had formal education — her dreams were put on pause.
That all changed thanks to AXE-Filles, a Save the Children girls’ education programme that identified Adel and helped her re-enrol in school — completely free of charge.
Today, Adel is thriving. Her school has been rebuilt with six new classrooms, proper toilets, trained teachers, and SRH (sexual and reproductive health) clubs. She’s excelling in maths and French, proudly serving as head girl, and already dreaming of becoming a nurse.
This programme is transforming education for tens of thousands of girls across the DRC, providing school kits, menstrual hygiene supplies, and safe learning spaces — so girls like Adel can take control of their futures.
