India Orders WhatsApp to Pause New Username Feature, Seeks Explanation | Firstpost Live | 4K
India has asked Meta to pause the rollout of WhatsApp's proposed username feature and explain its privacy and security safeguards within three days. The feature would allow users to connect without sharing their phone numbers, but the government fears it could make impersonation, online fraud and cybercrime harder to detect. Meta said the feature is not yet live and will be introduced gradually with multiple anti-abuse protections, including reserved usernames and scam detection systems. The company also said phone numbers will still be required to use WhatsApp. Tech experts have also raised concerns over the potential misuse of lookalike usernames.
