LIVE: Niger's Junta Announces Nationalisation of Its Only Gold Mine | Firstpost Africa | N18G
Amid a surge of anti-Western sentiment and a series of military coups, the Sahel nations of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso are asserting greater control over their mineral resources. Niger's junta has recently announced nationalisation of the country's only industrial gold mine, accusing its Australian operator of "serious breaches" and a failure to meet investment commitments. This move follows a similar decision in June to nationalise the local branch of French uranium giant Orano. The nationalisation drive is fuelled by a desire for economic sovereignty and a response to deepening security crises. In neighbouring Mali and Burkina Faso, juntas are also revising contracts with foreign mining companies to increase local ownership and ensure more favourable terms for the state. These actions reflect a widespread perception that Western nations have disproportionately benefited from the region’s wealth. Bolstered by new partnerships with countries like Russia and China, these juntas are working to reduce their dependence on Europe. Also on the show:
