Indonesia yang kala itu belum genap berusia satu tahun, mengalami gejolak politik yang membuat tokoh republik terpecah menjadi dua kubu.
Kubu pertama yang mendukung langkah diplomasi dengan Belanda seperti Presiden Soekarno, Moh. Hatta hingga Perdana Menteri Sutan Sjahrir.
Sedangkan kelompok oposisi yang memilih mempertahankan kemerdekaan secara militer yaitu Tan Malaka, Achmad Soebardjo hingga Chaerul Saleh.
Upaya kudeta dilakukan oleh kelompok Persatuan Perjuangan yang tak senang dengan kepemimpinan PM Sutan Sjahrir.
Puncaknya ketika kelompok oposisi ditangkap karena menculik Sjahrir dan anggota kabinet.
Beberapa dari mereka kemudian dijatuhi hukuman, meski akhirnya dibebaskan karena mendapat grasi presiden.
