Rencana itu dinilai sebuah langkah yang berpotensi menahan warga Palestina dalam kondisi mirip “kamp konsentrasi” atau tawanan.
Yair Lapid, pimpinan partai oposisi terbesar Israel, mengatakan rencana pembangunan kota kemanusiaan di atas Kota Rafah sebagai gagasan buruk dari segala sudut.
Pemerintah Israel mengatakan, pada mulanya kota kemanusiaan akan menampung sekitar 600.000 warga Palestina.
Namun, untuk jangka panjang adalah pemindahan seluruh penduduk Gaza, yang berjumlah lebih dari 2 juta orang ke wilayah tersebut.
Ehud Olmert, mantan PM Israel, menilai rencana pemindahan warga Palestina ke kota kemanusiaan baru tidak bisa dilepaskan dari praktik pembersihan etnis.
Ia juga menambahkan, ketika membangun kamp untuk menyingkirkan lebih dari separuh Gaza, sama saja dengan upaya membuang warga Gaza keluar.
Philippe Lazzarini, Kepala Badan PBB untuk Pengungsi Palestina juga ikut mempertanyakan.
Ditakutkan langkah ini adalah pengusiran ratusan ribu warga Palestina.
Namun Netanyahu menyamoaikan telah bekerja sama dengan negara yang bersedia membantu memberikan masa depan yang lebih baik bagi warga Palestina.
