Massive Ultra-Orthodox protest on Jerusalem streets Against IDF Enlistment

A massive demonstration unfolded in Jerusalem's Shabbat Square on Sunday as thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jews gathered to vehemently oppose the conscription of yeshiva students into the Israeli army.

The protest, organized largely by the "Jerusalem Faction," showcased a unified stance against what they view as a threat to their religious beliefs and way of life.

Protesters brandished placards adorned with defiant slogans such as "We will not enlist in the enemy army" and "We will die rather than enlist," illustrating the depth of their resistance to compulsory military service.

The gathering, reported extensively by Walla news, highlighted the intensity of sentiments within the ultra-Orthodox community regarding the recent decision by the Israeli Supreme Court.

Just days ago, the Supreme Court ruled to enforce conscription among ultra-Orthodox men and curtail state funding for yeshivas that do not comply. This landmark decision, which mandates integration into national military service, has exacerbated longstanding tensions. For many ultra-Orthodox Jews, military enlistment is perceived as a direct challenge to their religious traditions and communal autonomy.

"This court decision is a grave threat to our way of life," remarked one protester, encapsulating the broader sentiment among demonstrators. The issue has deeply divided Israeli society for decades, with the recent legal ruling marking a significant juncture in the ongoing debate over the role of ultra-Orthodox communities within the military framework.

רכבו של שר השיכון יצחק גולדקנופף נקלע להפגנה, והמוחים זרקו לעברו אבנים. הוא חולץ על ידי שוטרים. בהמשך נרגם גם רכבו של השר לשעבר יעקב ליצמן באבנים בשכונת רוממה.

כוחות המשטרה ומג"ב עצרו חמישה חשודים. שניים מהם נעצרו בגין תקיפת שוטרים, ושלושה חשודים נוספים נעצרו בגין יידוי אבנים וחפצים. החשודים שנעצרו הועברו לחקירה בתחנת המשטרה.

מהמשטרה נמסר כי החל משעות הערב המוקדמות, פעלה המשטרה לאפשר את המחאה במרכז ירושלים לאלפי מוחים.

"כבר בתחילת הערב, הפכה המחאה להפרת סדר כשמפרי סדר יידו אבנים בעת שחלף במקום רכבו של שר בממשלת ישראל, וחלק מהמוחים הקיפו ותקפו את הרכב, וכן השליכו חפצים לעברו ולעבר כוחות המשטרה במקום. בעקבות כך, פעלו כוחות המשטרה לחילוץ הרכב בבטחה" נמסר.

"בהמשך החלה באזור צומת הרחובות שרי ישראל-מלכי ישראל הפרת סדר והתפרעות אלימה על ידי המון, שכללה השלכת חפצים, אבנים, בקבוקי זכוכית, קרשים וגדרות ברזל לעבר השוטרים ולמרכז הצומת. בנוסף חלק ממפרי הסדר הבעירו במקום פחים בניגוד לחוק".

עוד נמסר כי לאחר שקצין משטרה כרז מוקדם יותר והורה למתפרעים להתפזר מהמקום, וכשהפרות הסדר וההתפרעויות נמשכו - החלה המשטרה בשימוש בכוח ובאמצעים לפיזור הפרות סדר, לצורך הדיפת ופיזור מפרי הסדר.

בהמשך הערב באזור רחוב ירמיהו, החלה הפרת סדר נוספת שבמהלכה פורעי חוק תקפו והשליכו חפצים לעבר רכבו של נבחר ציבור לשעבר שחלף במקום. גם במקרה זה, פעלה המשטרה לפיזורם וחילוץ הרכב ויושביו.

בעקבות הפרות הסדר האלימות, מספר שוטרים נפגעו כתוצאה מאבנים וחפצים שהושלכו לעברם ופגעו בהם, בהם שוטרת שנפגעה קלות בראשה ופרש משטרתי שנפגע ברגלו. אחרי חצות נפתחו כלל צירי התנועה שנחסמו במהלך שעות הערב.

נצ"מ שלומי טובול, מפקד תחנת לב הבירה, אמר בסיום הפרת הסדר: "בשלב מסויים המחאה הפכה להפרת סדר אלימה בהשתתפות של מאות מפרי סדר. בשעות האחרונות היו יידויי אבנים, חפצים, קרשים, ומכל הבא ליד לעבר שוטרים ולוחמי מג"ב שפעלו באזור. בשלב הזה שבו המחאה הפכה להפרת סדר אלימה, הורנו על פיזורה. משפורעי החוק לא התפזרו והמשיכו להפר את הסדר, להשליך חפצים לעבר כוחות המשטרה ולהצית שריפות על הכביש, נאלצנו לפעול בכוח ובאמצעים לפיזור הפרות סדר במטרה להדוף אותם ולהפסיק את ההתפרעות.

"לא ניתן להתעלם מכך שחלק ניכר מאותם פורעי חוק היו ילדים- לא בטוח שכולם בגיל האחריות הפלילית. זו אינה הפעם הראשונה שאנחנו ואני באופן אישי, נתקלים בילדים שעומדים בחזית הפרות סדר באזור. זוהי תופעה מדאיגה, מסוכנת ופסולה שראויה לכל גנאי וחייבת להיות מוקעת מהשורש ולהיפסק", אמר נצ"מ טובול.

"אותם אנשים שניסו הערב לפגוע בשוטרים ובשר בממשלה, שהפרו את הסדר ושנהגו באלימות- מטילים כתם גדול על הציבור החרדי כולו בהתנהגותם האלימה והמסוכנת. אנחנו רואים בחומרה את האלימות שהופנתה נגד השוטרים ולוחמי מג"ב. נמשיך לאפשר מחאות כחוק לכל אדם, ובתנאי שהן לא תנוצלנה למפגן של אלימות והפרת הסדר משולחת רסן, כפי שראינו הערב בירושלים".
