I don’t think I have ever seen an invention that left me asking more questions.This walking car is the first functional prototype of something Rosmar H which is the brainchild of Romanian inventor Adrian Roșca. The prototype recently surfaced online and got quite a bit of media attention but Mr Roșca has been working on this invention for more than a decade.
So why does this car "walk" instead of moving like every other car out there? The car walks because vehicles move in a linear manner. Think about it, we convert the linear motion of a piston to the rotational motion of the crankshaft, and the transmission and the differentials, driveshafts, and wheels and then we convert that again to the linear motion of the vehicle itself.
Now, The Rosmar H has no engine, it has no electrical motors, it has no transmission or differential of any kind and uses zero gasoline and zero batteries save for a conventional lead acid 12v battery. Yet it allegedly has a top speed of 600kmh and it accelerates to 100kmh per hour in 0.3 seconds. I know it sounds absolutely insane but I think that the 100km/h in 0.3 seconds is actually possible. On the other hand I think the 600kmh top speed is absolute nonsense. We’re going to crunch some numbers later.
Now the entire car is based around this, which is basically an air cylinder. What’s important about this pneumatic cylinder is that it’s double acting. When I release air and send air to this side of the piston it pushes the piston that way, and when I release air on the other side of the piston it of course pushes the piston in the opposite direction. All we have to do is keep repeating this to get movement.
As you can tell, this is a compressed air car. That’s why it doesn’t have an engine, or motors, or batteries. The only thing it needs is compressed air. Zero emissions. Well yes, but compressed air cars have been tried before. Many times. Even by big names like Tata and Peugeot and many others. Many of the projects received millions of dollars of financial backing. But in the end they all failed. But the Rosmar does one important thing completely differently from all of the compressed air cars.
The mistake that all other compressed air cars made is that they used engines. Some had multi stage pistons, others tried funky vane engines, but they all used some form of engine. When you release compressed air into an engine it acts just like combustion. It expands. As it expands it drives the piston down.
When we compress air we do work on the air, we increase the number of air molecules in the same space which causes more of them to bump against each other more often. This work done on the air increases the potential energy in the system which we measure as heat. When we release the compressed air to drive the piston the air expands and uses up its potential energy which means that the temperature must drop. And it does, it drops very rapidly. This is something called expansion cooling. We use this property of gases in refrigerators, air conditioning and other devices.
But in an engine expansion cooling is a problem. When air cools down it becomes more dense, it shrinks and that means that the pressure drops. Expansion decreases. We don’t want less pressure, we want more pressure because we use pressure of the expanding air to drive the piston down. If there’s less of it we extract less work from the energy stored in our tank which means less power and less range. This is one of the reasons why all previous compressed air cars had pathetic driving range.
But this is where the Rosmar concept really shines. All the other compressed cars had engines which doesn’t just mean all the moving parts and friction and maintenance….it also means that every piston stroke is very short. To cover the distance of one car the average engine will do roughly 50 to 100 piston strokes. The Rosmar can do it with one.
Because each stroke takes more time and space it gives the expanding air the opportunity to absorb heat from its environment which offsets most of the negative effects of expansion cooling.
