US Ramps Up Tomahawk Missile Production with $22.9 Billion Deal | Vantage on Firstpost | 4K
The United States has signed a major contract to procure more Tomahawk cruise missiles with Raytheon being handed the $23 Billion contract. As per the deal, Raytheon will increase Tomahawk missile production from around to 60 to 200 to more than 1,000 per year. The Tomahawk is a few decades old but serves as one of the major attack platforms in the US Navy and US Army for deep precision strikes. While the US is doubling down on the Tomahawk subsonic cruise missile, China and Russia are increasing their ballistic and hypersonic missile arsenal. As per estimates, China is producing nearly 200 hypersonic missiles every year, with Russia making upto 180 hypersonic weapons every year. On the other hand, the US has witnessed at least 10 major hypersonic weapon testing failures owing to technological challenges and soaring costs. Is the US losing the missile race?Meanwhile China is tightening its exit rules from September 15, giving border authorities greater power to stop citizens from leaving the country in cases involving technology and industrial security. The rules allow authorities to restrict travel when a person’s actions may threaten China’s technological security, while other provisions cover crimes abroad and false information from foreign nationals. The move comes as Beijing seeks to protect sensitive technology and retain skilled talent, including AI experts, while also tightening control over rare earths and related expertise.
