Le dimanche 27 juillet 1890, à l’auberge Ravoux, à Auvers-sur-Oise, quelques heures après avoir peint le tableau Racines d’arbres, Vincent Van Gogh rentre dans sa chambre, une balle dans l'abdomen. Il succombe à sa blessure deux jours plus tard. Si la thèse communément admise est celle du suicide causé par une ultime crise de folie, un biographe américain, Steven Naifeh, a avancé l'idée d'un homicide. En effet, pourquoi le peintre se serait donné la mort alors qu'il traversait une période particulièrement productive et entrevoyait le succès ? À la manière d'une enquête policière, ce nouvel épisode de la série documentaire présentée par l'actrice Florence Kasumba explore des hypothèses contradictoires et brosse un nouveau portrait du peintre, dont les zones d'ombre ne font qu'entretenir le mythe.
