Per la prima volta nella storia, l’umanità ha potuto osservare da vicino il polo Sud del Sole. A renderlo possibile è stata la sonda Solar Orbiter dell’Agenzia Spaziale Europea, che grazie alla sua nuova orbita inclinata ha inviato sulla Terra immagini e video spettacolari di una zona finora mai esplorata della nostra stella. Le fotografie, scattate a marzo 2025 quando l’orbita della sonda ha raggiunto un’inclinazione di 17 gradi rispetto all’equatore solare, mostrano il polo solare sia nella luce visibile che in quella ultravioletta, permettendo agli scienziati di studiarne la struttura, il campo magnetico e l’attività del gas a milioni di gradi presente nella sua atmosfera esterna.
