An interstellar comet known as 3I ATLAS has passed through the solar system, making its closest approach to Earth at a distance of about 270 million kilometres. Scientists say the object formed around another star and is only the third interstellar visitor ever confirmed, after Oumuamua in 2017 and Borisov in 2019. The comet was first detected in July by the ATLAS telescope system in Chile and was found to be moving too fast to be bound to the Sun. NASA and other observatories studied it using space, ground-based and X-ray telescopes. NASA says the comet poses no threat to Earth and will eventually leave the solar system permanently.---
