Gempa tersebut terjadi tepat di Hari Ulang Tahun (HUT) ke-80 Republik Indonesia, sekira pukul 05.38 WIB.
Masyarakat dilaporkan sampai berhamburan keluar rumah saat untuk mencari tempat aman.
Menurut keterangan warga, gempa terjadi selama kurang lebih 15 detik di Kecamatan Poso Pesisir seperti Desa Masani, Towu, Pinedapa, Tokorondo, Tangkura, dan Lape.
Pusat gempa saat ini berada 18 kilometer (km) di barat laut Poso, Sulawesi Tengah, dengan kedalaman 10 km.
Sementara itu berdasarkan laporan Badan Meteorologi Klimatologi dan Geofisika, gempat tersebut tak berpotensi tsunami.
Namun meski demikian, diketahui setidaknya 29 orang menjadi korban dalam bencana tersebut.
Dua orang bahkan dilaporkan berada dalam kondisi kritis pada Minggu pagi ini.
Sementara itu menurut Kepala BNPB Suharyanto di Jakarta, menyebut setidaknya ada 13 korban yang dilarikan ke RSUD Poso lantaran mengalami kondisi kritis.
Selain itu satu unit fasilitas ibadah yakni Gereja Jemaat Elim di Desa Masani dialaporkan mengalami kerusakan akibat guncangan gempa bumi.
