Dans les années 1930, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, encore étudiant, parcourt l'Europe pendant plusieurs étés. Dans un journal soigneusement tenu, il dépeint le vieux continent de l'avant-guerre et décrit les tensions qui annoncent les débuts du conflit. Les tendances politiques de chaque pays le passionnent et suscitent de grandes réflexions chez ce fils d'ambassadeur américain. Grâce au travail de son père, il rencontre nombre de diplomates étrangers, dont il suit parfois les réunions. Lorsque Kennedy observe la montée du fascisme, et plus particulièrement celle du nazisme, il est tout d'abord fasciné, avant d'en pressentir les dangers. Son travail de reporter le mène ensuite à de nombreuses reprises en Allemagne, où il documentera notamment les traumatismes de la guerre en 1945. Ce documentaire historique brosse le portrait d'un homme politique en devenir, exposant son parcours jusqu'au célèbre discours de 1963 "Ich bin ein Berliner".
