Sejumlah tokoh menyampaikan keberatannya karena frasa ini bisa berdampak besar terutama bagi penganut agama lain.
Sementara itu kelompok Islam tetap mempertahankan posisi mereka.
Sehari setelah proklamasi yakni 18 Agustus 1945, Wakil Presiden Mohammad Hatta menyampaikan perlunya perubahan penting atas Pembukaan dan Batang Tubuh UUD.
Hatta juga mendapat laporan bahwa orang-orang Kristen di wilayah Timur Indonesia mengancam tak akan bergabung jika sila pertama tersebut tak diubah.
Singkat cerita, atas peran Hatta untuk melakukan penyesuaian, maka sila pertama dapat diubah menjadi Ketuhanan Yang Maha Esa.
