Sự việc xảy ra khi các mật vụ lao vào che chắn cho ông và một trong số họ đã ném giày của ông đi để dọn đường sơ tán.
Trong cuộc phỏng vấn với New York Post sau vụ ám sát hụt ngày 13/7, ông Trump kể lại rằng các mật vụ đã phản ứng nhanh chóng như những cầu thủ bóng bầu dục, che chắn cho ông ngay sau khi nghe thấy tiếng súng. "Họ đã làm rất tốt. Đó là một điều phi thường với tất cả chúng ta," ông Trump chia sẻ. Trong lúc các mật vụ đang bảo vệ và chuẩn bị sơ tán cựu Tổng thống Mỹ khỏi sân khấu, ông vẫn kêu lên: "Chờ đã, để tôi lấy giày". Các mật vụ ập vào quá mạnh khiến giày của ông văng ra. Theo đoạn video được Fox News đăng tải ngày 16/7, một nữ đặc vụ đã ném giày của ông Trump khỏi sân khấu, dường như để dọn đường sơ tán đưa ông lên xe bọc thép. Chiếc giày còn lại vẫn nằm trên sân khấu. Ông Trump đã yêu cầu được đi giày tới bốn lần, nhưng các mật vụ bỏ qua yêu cầu của ông vì điều quan trọng nhất lúc đó là sự an toàn của cựu Tổng thống.
