Eastern Michigan Twins Charles & Carl Thomas Make Rare NBA Appearances
Just a bit of obscure NBA history here. Charles & Carl Thomas often slip through the cracks when the topic of NBA twins springs about. Their careers in the league were modest—Carl Thomas made his NBA debut during the 1991-92 season, scoring 12 points for the Kings in his one and only appearance that season before a five-year NBA absence—but the Thomas name belongs among the likes of Van Arsdale, Lopez, Morris, Grant, and Collins as sets of NBA twins. Before making their NBA debuts, the Thomas twins teamed up to lead Eastern Michigan University to one of the most successful seasons in team history, winning the MAC with a 26-7 record and making a Cinderella run to the Sweet 16 before falling to a No. 1 seeded North Carolina team that featured nine future NBA players. Carl's 27-point performance against UNC earned him a spot on the All-Regional Team.
After they both went undrafted, the Thomas brothers each made their respective NBA debuts in November 1991 - Charles with the Pistons, Carl with the Kings. Charles appeared in 36 games for the Pistons in his lone NBA season, averaging 1.3 points while playing behind the Hall of Fame backcourt in Isiah Thomas and Joe Dumars.
Carl, meanwhile, had his aforementioned single-game appearance for the Kings in '91 then didn't return to a regular season NBA roster until joining the Cleveland Cavaliers during the 1996-97 season. Carl went on to appear in 62 games over the next two seasons for the Cavs, Warriors, and Magic, averaging 2.9 points per game.
Following the conclusion of their playing days, both Thomas brothers have made the rounds in the college coaching circuit, generally serving as assistants.
As of 2026, Carl has been the head coach at Cleary University in Howell, Michigan, just up the road a bit via US-23 from EMU.
