Vernon Maxwell with the type of '90s taunting that wouldn't fly today
March 12, 1994 - Believe it or not, the league had already begun cracking down on trash talking at this point. Things got so heated during the 1992-93 regular season that the NBA felt compelled to intervene with rule modifications before the season even concluded, releasing the following addendum prior the 1993 playoffs:"Any player who throws a punch now immediately ejected from the game, suspended for at least one game, and fined an appropriate dollar amount. Any player throwing a punch that connects with another player will be ejected from the game, suspended for a minimum of one to five games, and fined an appropriate dollar amount. Teams will also be fined an amount equal to the total sum of their players’ fines. Any player leaving the bench area during a fight will be fined $2,500, up from $500, and that player’s team will be fined $5,000 for each of its players who leave the bench area."
The league continued their crackdown of in-game physicality and taunting heading into the 1993-94 season, best exemplified in the clip above with Vernon Maxwell receiving a warning for his histrionics in the face of Willie Anderson. Still, there were often times where officials continued to look the other way, as in the case of this Chris Webber-Mark West clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNN0o9FYAf8
The NBA likely felt particularly motivated to crack down on taunting and physicality even further following the 1993-94 playoffs, which featured major bench-clearing brawls in both the Hawks-Heat and Bulls-Knicks series.
