Egypt vs Ethiopia: Cairo Issues Warning As Abiy Ahmed's Govt Plans More Nile Dams | Firstpost Africa
Watch this video as Firstpost examines Egypt’s latest warning to Ethiopia over control of Nile water flows, after reports that Addis Ababa is considering additional dams on the river. Cairo says it will not accept or allow any party to control the flow of the Nile to downstream countries, and warns that it has several options to defend its interests. The dispute centres on Ethiopia’s Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, or GERD, which Addis Ababa says is vital for electricity, development and the use of its water resources. For Egypt, the Nile is a national security issue, supplying more than 90 percent of its freshwater. Sudan also sits downstream, making the stakes regional. With no final legally binding agreement governing the GERD, new Ethiopian dam projects could further intensify tensions over water releases, data sharing and control of the river.
