The homecoming of humanity | Dr. Arash Nemat | TEDxAsmayee

With unprecedented advancements in medicine, communication, and space exploration, we seem to be on the cusp of conquering the universe. Yet, despite these accomplishments, humanity remains mired in wars, poverty, and human suffering.

Drawing from his own experiences, Dr. Nemat asks: What is the true cost of progress? He traces the history of the 20th century, marked by devastating wars and political repression, highlighting how science and technology have been used both to uplift and to destroy. In this thought-provoking talk, he urges us to reimagine progress—not as the mere accumulation of knowledge or power, but as the pursuit of empathy, justice, and peace. With wisdom from Rumi and Saadi, Dr. Nemat challenges us to question whether our advancements are truly advancing humanity, or merely leading us down a destructive path.

This talk is a call to action for the youth, thinkers, and dreamers of today to shape a world where knowledge is anchored in compassion, where technology serves humanity, and where peace is the legacy we leave behind. Dr. Nemat, originally from Kabul, ranked first in Afghanistan’s nationwide university entrance exam (Kankor) in 2004 and entered the Faculty of Medicine at Kabul University. Alongside his studies, he co-led Raufi Educational Center, which became a hub of learning for thousands of Afghan students.
After graduation, he joined Kabul Medical University as a lecturer and later earned a CSC Scholarship to study at Nanfang Medical University in China, where he completed his specialization, Master’s degree, and Chinese language studies.
In 2019, he was awarded the title of Best International Student of the university.
His academic contributions include publishing over 50 scientific papers in prestigious international journals. Continuing his journey, he moved to Karolinska Institute in Sweden – the world’s 6th top-ranked medical university – where he is currently pursuing his PhD research. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx Receive SMS online on sms24.me
