Indian IT Firms Slash US H-1B Visa Moves Amid AI Boom, Trump Immigration Crackdown | Spotlight |N18G

Indian IT giants are reshaping their global strategies as dependence on H-1B visas steadily declines. A new US immigration report shows the top six software service firms cut sponsorships by nearly half in just five years — from over 29,000 in FY21 to just 13,500 this year. Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, HCL, Wipro, LTI-Mindtree, and Tech Mahindra all reported sharp year-on-year drops, with Infosys alone slashing sponsorships by 77%. The shift comes amid tighter US immigration rules under the Trump administration and new proposals like the HIRE Act. But the trend isn’t only policy-driven — firms are investing in overseas talent, automation, and diversified operations to reduce risks and secure long-term growth.
