Il Nicchio ha vinto il Palio di Siena con Giovanni Atzeni, detto Tittia, su Anda e Bola. Per la contrada dei Pispini è il 43° successo e arriva a 28 anni dall'ultima vittoria, conquistata il 16 agosto 1998 con Il Bufera su Re Artù. Il 3 luglio scorso, invece, a trionfare era stata l'Aquila. La festa del Nicchio è stata però segnata da un brutto incidente avvenuto subito dopo il traguardo. Un contradaiolo, entrato in pista per festeggiare, è stato travolto dal cavallo del Nicchio, provocando la violenta caduta di Tittia, che è rimasto immobile a terra per alcuni istanti. Dalle immagini si vede inoltre l'animale, insieme al fantino, urtare anche una terza persona. Tittia è stato soccorso e trasportato via in barella.
