Des vestiges incas dans les Andes aux grottes ornées d’Afrique du Sud, il revient dévoiler les mystères des civilisations anciennes.
En l’an 986, après avoir été banni de Norvège puis d'Islande, le chef Viking Erik le Rouge part à la conquête d’une terre inhabitée : le Groenland. Avec son littoral austère, ses vallées dénudées balayées par les vents et ses fjords peu navigables, "la terre verte" est bien moins accueillante qu’il ne l’avait imaginé. Comment les Vikings ont-ils réussi à conquérir ce territoire de l’extrême et à s’y installer durablement ? Peter Eeckhout rejoint sur place une équipe de chercheurs franco-danoise, qui, à rebours des idées reçues, a découvert suffisamment d'éléments attestant de leur implantation. Mais si les explorateurs scandinaves ne sont pas morts de faim ou de froid sur ces terres hostiles, pourquoi les archéologues ne retrouvent-ils aucune trace de leur présence postérieure au XVe siècle ?
