Why does Africa look much smaller than it actually is on the world map? And why has the United Nations backed a new map projection?
The UN General Assembly has approved a resolution supporting more accurate representations of the world's continents, with 164 countries voting in favour, the United States voting against and six countries abstaining. The initiative, led by Togo and backed by African countries, promotes the Equal Earth projection as an alternative to the widely used Mercator projection.
The Mercator projection, created by Gerardus Mercator in 1569, was designed primarily for navigation. While it preserves useful directions and angles, it significantly distorts the apparent area of landmasses as they move farther from the Equator. This can make Greenland and other northern regions appear disproportionately large while making Africa and other equatorial regions appear much smaller. Africa is actually around 14 times larger than Greenland.
The Equal Earth projection, developed in 2018, is an equal-area projection, meaning it aims to preserve the relative surface areas of continents and countries more accurately. However, no flat world map can represent every aspect of the spherical Earth without some distortion. The key difference is that Equal Earth prioritises area accuracy, whereas Mercator prioritises characteristics useful for navigation.
