US Food benefits crisis: Work requirements and restrictions hit hard
Millions of low-income Americans rely on the food benefit program called SNAP for food amid rising living costs.42.4 million people, including legal residents, currently receive benefits.
Seventy percent are elderly, disabled, or children, with average aid under $351 per month.
New rules require able-bodied adults 18–64 to work 80 hours monthly or face benefit limits.
States will cover half of federal administration costs from October, adding budget pressures.
Restrictions on purchasing sugary drinks, snacks, and junk food begin January 1 in 18 states.
Officials claim the rules promote health and self-reliance; recipients warn they’ll hurt the vulnerable.
