Un reporte del periódico Miami Herald descubrió que cerca de dos tercios de los 1.800 inmigrantes que hasta julio estaban detenidos en dicha prisión, a fines de agosto habían desaparecido de la base de datos que el Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas publica en Internet y ni sus familias ni sus equipos jurídicos estaban logrando localizarlos. A principios de septiembre, un tribunal federal de apelaciones dictaminó que esta prisión podía seguir funcionando a pesar de los informes de que allí se cometían abusos.
“Si este modelo dejamos que se multiplique en el resto del país, lo que hace es agarrar un sistema que ya es terrible, el sistema de detención contra inmigrantes en este país, y de alguna manera lo hace todavía peor, que realmente es increíble porque ya era un sistema tan abusivo, tan inhumano, lo están haciendo todavía más abusivo, inhumano y extrajudicial”, señala Thomas Kennedy, analista de políticas de la organización Coalición de Inmigrantes de Florida.
