Gregorio Gringo Honasan military rebels against Aquino government 1991
Philippines: Rebel leader Colonel Gregorio Gringo Honasan says his forces are strong enough to launch another coup attempt against the Aquino government should current peace talks fail. The negotiations began almost 3 months ago. Shortly after, the Philippine Armed Forces freed 29 military rebels involved in the 1989 coup attempt. But negotiations were interrupted by the statements of an American who claimed that the Corazon Aquino government tried to hire him to assassinate Honasan last year. Honasan, who has the support of some dissatisfied members of the Philippine military, met privately with General Lisandro Abadia, leader of the Philippine Armed Forces, and other members of the Government. Gringo detailed a sophisticated plan to erase the image of his group of murderers who rise to power. We begin with reconciliation with a program for economic recovery, he says. His Group requests the immediate withdrawal of North American troops and the return of Marcos' body. Perhaps one of the most concrete evidence of Honasan's forces is the press conference that was held. In four different groups, 6 journalists were taken to the rebel's refuge somewhere in Manila, while the Philippine Government offers almost 190 thousand dollars for the capture of Honasan.
