Activistas protegen un álamo de más de 200 años para evitar la construcción del muro fronterizo

En la pequeña ciudad fronteriza de Lochiel, Arizona, se ha instalado un campamento de protesta con el fin de impedir que contratistas federales construyan un nuevo tramo del muro impulsado por el presidente Trump en la frontera con México. En el centro del campamento de protesta hay un álamo de 200 años de antigüedad conocido como árbol “abuela”, sobre el cual activistas mantienen una sentada para detener físicamente su destrucción.

“La gente está logrando obligar al Gobierno a detener, ralentizar o al menos cambiar de rumbo en la construcción del muro fronterizo”, dice el periodista John Washington, redactor del medio queer Lookout y autor de varios libros sobre inmigración. “Están dejando muy en claro que esta es una lucha tanto ambiental como política”.
