Is Friedrich Merz the man to fix Europe's broken backbone on the global stage? | To The Point
Germany has decided. Olaf Scholz governing coalition crashed, the three parties ALL punished with historically low numbers. And the big winner is:Friedrich Merz and his center-right Christian Democrats. He must now forge a new coalition goverment and lead Europe's biggest economy out of its current crisis. He also needs to take the lead in Europe, countering an increasingly hostile White House. But the other big winner is the far-right AfD, nearly doubling its share of the vote to around 20 percent – helped in no small measure by vocal support from Donald Trump and Elon Musk. But: Merz vowed he will under NO circumstance work with the far right. The question: Friedrich Merz to the rescue – is he the man to fix Europe's broken backbone on the global stage?
