Why The Rich Are Going BROKE (At Record Rates)

The rich aren’t supposed to go broke like this. For years, wealthy investors used a strategy known as “Buy, Borrow, Die.” Instead of selling stocks and paying capital gains tax, they borrowed against their portfolios at low interest rates. But that system depends on cheap money and rising asset prices.

Now borrowing costs have surged, margin debt has exploded, and falling portfolios can trigger automatic margin calls. If borrowers can’t provide more cash or collateral, banks can liquidate their stocks within days. That creates a dangerous feedback loop. Forced sales push prices lower, potentially triggering even more liquidations, and the stocks being dumped are often the same companies held inside index funds, pensions, and 401(k)s.

The wealthy may have signed the loans, but everyone can feel the fallout.
