Israel-Gaza After October 7, 2023: The New West Asia Explained | Spotlight
Three years after the Hamas-led October 7, 2023 attacks on Israel, the consequences have reshaped West Asia and the wider international debate around the conflict. More than 1,200 people were killed and 251 were taken hostage in the attacks, triggering Israel's war against Hamas. Gaza has since faced enormous civilian casualties officially over 73,000 deaths alongside catastrophic displacement and destruction. The conflict spread beyond Gaza, involving Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen and Iranian-linked groups across the region, while Israel and Iran moved into direct confrontation. At the same time, the war disrupted Arab-Israeli normalisation efforts, intensified the debate over Palestinian statehood and placed new pressure on the United States and European governments. In this edition of Spotlight, Daniela Laurel is joined by David Dunn, professor of International Politics at University of Birmingham, as they examine what October 7 changed and what it means for West Asia's future.---
