In retrospect, Super Mario RPG was a recipe for success, but that wasn’t exactly clear at the time. Taking a franchise that was known for its simple but effective real-time platforming and completely flipping the script was a risky play. One that really shouldn’t work on paper, but surprisingly, it does, to the point where nearly 30 years later, it has become one of the most beloved RPGs of all time. A real lightning in a bottle moment. Not every game is made for everyone, and if there’s one subgenre that comes to mind when i think of this, it would be RPG’s. Specifically, the Japanese variety. Turn-based combat is a big barrier for people to overcome, and I don’t fully blame players for avoiding certain games because of it. I mean, when the main activity isn’t for you, then you’d be hard-pressed to find enjoyment. This dilemma has plagued jrpg’s for decades, and in the 90’s square soft was looking for a way to expand their horizons and make an rpg with worldwide appeal. It turns out that nintendo was actually interested in collaborating with them around this time, and what this resulted in was a one of a kind experience. So for today, we’re going to be taking a quick look at Super Mario RPG, analyzing its strengths and weaknesses and seeing why this game works as a beginner rpg.
Why do people love Super Mario RPG?. Super Mario RPG is one of the most beloved RPGs of all time. Some might even say that Super Mario RPG is the best Super Nintendo RPG and one of the best games made by Square Soft (now known as Square Enix). Super Mario RPG is a great beginner RPG, and in this Super Mario RPG Review, Super Mario RPG Analysis, and Super Mario RPG Critique. I will be giving a thorough examination of Super Mario RPG and answering if Super Mario RPG is still a good game in 2026. This will be a Super Mario RPG 30 Years Later type of video but not a full on Super Mario RPG Retrospective. In a way, I am looking at Super Mario RPG 30 Years Later, but that's not the entirety. I will not be talking about the Super Mario RPG Remake as I have only played the original game. The Super Mario RPG Remake brings a bunch of gameplay changes and new content that make it the preferred version. This isn't a Super Mario RPG vs Super Mario RPG Remake video, so don't go in with the expectation that I will be talking about the Super Mario RPG Remake.
