При этом ещё в 2025 году начальник российского генштаба Валерий Герасимов отчитался, что армия РФ якобы уже захватила город.На фронте, утверждает Тригубов, российские военные хоть и временно, но всё же снизили интенсивность боевых действий. 20 ноября 2025 года Валерий Герасимов бодро рапортовал Владимиру Путину о якобы взятии Купянска Харьковской области. В ответ кремлёвский лидер заявлял о якобы заблокированных в городе пятнадцати батальонах ВСУ — это до 12 тысяч военных.
Картина, которую рисовал Герасимов, выглядела почти идеальной. По его словам, подразделения группировки успешно продвигаются в юго-восточной части Волчанска, освобождено более 80% территории города. Также он заявлял, что соединения группировки «Запад» якобы освободили Купянск и продолжают уничтожение формирований ВСУ, окружённых на левом берегу реки Оскол.
